Hurrah for Governor Bob Riley!  He wrote a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers last week demanding they allow more water into Alabama so that Alabama Power could release less water downstream.  He got the answer we all wanted!  So it looks like Lake Martin won’t be dropping below 480 feet, as had been predicted, after all. The Corps rewrote the reservoir management manual in 1993 on how to handle a drought.  I applaud the Governor for taking this stand requiring them to follow their own guidelines!

I love Lake Martin!  I’ve been enjoying this lake all my life, but I haven’t been able to get out and fish as much as I would like in the last few years. So, boy was I glad to get out on the lake this past week.  Now anybody that knows the Duck boys knows what good fishermen they are.  And I just happen to be married to one of them.  And I have yet to go fishing with Reed that we didn’t bring home a good catch!  It was late afternoon and the crappie was hanging about 30 feet deep around the pilings where the old bridge was torn down at Kowaliga.  On around the bend heading up toward Parker Creek, we got into some good stripes 30 – 40 feet deep.  Now Reed is known for his ability to catch spottails and we had a good catch that afternoon.  So, bait was aplenty and fish were, too!

I have also had reports on bass fishing this week from anglers catching a few bass working the sandy banks shallow early in the mornings until about ten or eleven.  There are also some bass and catfish being caught late in the day and at night. The wild life has not been moving much except very early and then they get very quiet.  That tells me that the fish are the same, not very active up into the day.

In this summer of low water and little rain, it can be tough fishing times.  This may be a summer that will go down in history, and we might not ever see one like it again in my lifetime. But there are techniques that produce fish even in these tough times. Watch for upcoming articles about some of these techniques used by old time Lake Martin fisherman that are tried and true, proven to catch the limits every time you go out!
