Fourth of July Fishing on Lake Martin

Deborah Duck

Fourth of July on Lake Martin!  There is nothing better!  With the fourth falling in the middle of the week, it’s hard to know when to celebrate.  Load on up and come to Lake Martin for some of the best fishing ever!  I vote to include both weekends and all week long!

The water being down is not keeping the fish from biting.  In fact, it seems to be just the opposite!  I am getting reports of large amounts of bass, catfish, bream and crappie being caught.   Nice bass are being caught off rocky points dragging Carolina Rigs and using Finesse Worms.  The stripes are still running those shad, and are so much fun to watch when they get into them!  But more fun is to catch one!  You might try some large Jordan Deer Hair Jigs or Football Jigs.  I heard of success with large Silver Spoons also.

Live bait is doing well for most fishermen.  For every day fishing, you can’t beat a good ole’ wiggler.  I had a report of filling the boat up with catfish and bass using wigglers.  This angler put in at Kowaliga Bridge and fished off an island primarily on the bottom.  Jumbo Shiners and large Spot tails are working for the larger bass and stripes.  Bream are biting crickets and you can still get good crappie on small shiners or wigglers.  I had a report of 3 lb. crappie caught this week.  As the weather gets hotter, a great alternative for the Chartreuse Night Crawler is the Big Red Worm with the Glo!  They are hearty, lively and a little bigger than a wiggler.  Ask for Glo Worms at your local bait shop.

The great Fourth of July Fireworks Blast is on at the Lake Martin Amphitheater.  This is seven years in a row and promises to be on of the best yet with the gates opening at 4:30 p.m. and entertainment beginning at 6:00 p.m. The fireworks are scheduled for 9 p.m.  After a fun day on the water, what a great way to celebrate our freedom!  We live in a great country!   Keep it safe, no drinking and boating or driving.
