Fishihg Lake Martin

Lake Martin has warmed to the high sixties and in some places the low seventies. Sunshine has been nice but we still could use some rain. Fishing has started to pick up with lots of fish being caught.

Reports of crappie biting have been coming in along with some stripers up river. Spotted bass are biting all over the lake now as most areas have clear water with little stained water at all. Some of the larger spotted bass are still not being caught but good catches of smaller fish are reported. Large mouth bass are being caught but some are still in recovery from the spawn and those that are caught are not that big. You should consider live release of large mouth bass due to the fact that the population is down all over the lake. We have about a twenty per cent population of large mouth bass compared to eighty per cent spotted bass.

Baits that are producing are live bait with some good reports coming back into our newest bait shop at the intersection of 229 and 63 Kowaliga Bait and Tackle. Bass and crappie are being caught on live minnows. Reports of some good catches of catfish have been reported also on live worms. Artificial baits that are producing are small crank baits, finesse worms, lizards and top water. Methods that are working best with the plastic baits are the Carolina Rigs and Sliders. Water depths are from three feet to as deep as twenty five feet with both creeks and main lake area producing. Spring has arrives and with it great fishing.

Get out on the lake and enjoy but remember don’t throw your trash on the water keep it in the proper container and don’t throw it out at the ramp either. Show your raising and be a leader for your children take your trash and dispose of it in the proper container. If you would not throw trash in your front yard don’t throw it on the lake or the ramp areas. Till next week remember only you can keep our lake clean for the future.
