Water Temperatures Drop In Mid-April

Get this, water temperatures dropping into the high fifties and this is mid April. On the lower end of Lake Martin last week the fish and bait was off the banks suspended and now with this storm system that passed they will not be moving shallow. Warm days with sunshine however will bring them into shallow water in numbers as some feed after early spawning. Until this last storm the water all over the lake was as clear as anyone has seen in years making the jerk baits great baits to throw for active fish.

Any time you throw jerk baits or top water baits you need to keep a back up bait handy. Baits such as small jigs or sliders work great as top choices for follow up baits. When you see a strike or a fish following your other baits and then they miss or turn away you need to quickly throw a follow up bait in their direction. You can be assured if you do this quickly you will catch that fish.

Remember always be ready for a big fish bite when throwing jerk baits. Stripers love these baits as a good friend of mine was telling me. He had a striper come up about three feet from his boat and take his jerk bait away from him. Most fishermen use lighter line when throwing jerk baits and a mean striper that hits right at the boat will most times snap the line as they surge away. We can always say you should have done this or that but when it happens you are in shock for the split second when your bait is seen for the last time.

This recent weather conditions if enough rain has fallen up stream will help the white bass and striper fishing in places where streams flow into the lake and up river. Of course if up river gets muddy things will have to settle down some before it gets back right but there is lots of great fishing to come as we move into our spring here on Lake Martin. Nature will take over at times and give the fish a break so maybe all this will help the spawn this year. Next week we will cover how to go fishing with out spending a bundle of money. Till next time I’ve gone fishing.
