Usable Ramps Keep Fishing Going Strong on Lake

What public boat access ramps are usable now?  That seems to be the question with the lake level down 14 feet, lower than it’s been since the early 60’s and possibly even back to 1941.   Let me assure you that there is still plenty of water in Lake Martin and plenty of fish and they are biting!  You just have to be able to get to them to catch them!

Wayne Poole and friend Jim Hunsinger put in a Paces Point off Hwy. 34 this past weekend.  Wayne reports that gravel has been added to this ramp to extend it.  Gravel has been added to the public access ramp at Blue Creek also.  Other boaters tell me it is tough to get in and out at the Elkahatchee, Kowaliga, and Wind Creek ramps.  Keep me posted as you are out and about.  It will be interesting to see how the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources attack this problem of public access to our lake.

Wayne and Jim did have some luck as they were fishing last Sunday starting out about daylight.  They caught bass in 12 to 20 ft. of water working main river points.  Most were caught using Caroline rigged Zoom U-Tale worms Green Pumpkin and Kudzu.  They caught a few on Texas rigged worms same colors.  They wound up with 35.  Not a bad day of fishing!

Bobby Bounds was down from LaGrange, GA along with his club for a bass tournament.  He and his partner had the limit by 8:00 AM., again mostly smaller fish.  The big fish for the day was a 4.75 pound Largemouth.  We are always glad to have clubs come to Lake Martin for their tournaments.  Hope ya’ll come back soon Bobby!

Larry Collins was out fishing with his grandsons on Monday.  The wind was rough, but they caught 20 Bass in about 30 minutes on live Spottails.  He says the Catfish did not bite so well.  They only caught seven.  What a great way to spend the day out of school, fishing with Granddaddy!

Wind can be a major factor in fall fishing.  Find a windward shoreline where the wind is concentrating schools of baitfish.  The wind helps to make the baitfish easy prey for the bass.  According to some of the old-timers, bass face into the wind in these situations.  Use a lure that resembles the local baitfish.  Jason Shockley has painted a lure that he calls a Tennessee Shad that has a spot on its tail.  It has an amazing resemblance to our local Spot Tails.  Or use live bait if you can get it.  So go find a windy bank, and bring in a load of fish!
