Labor Day Weekend – what better place to celebrate than on beautiful Lake Martin!  We’re heading into it full force with many opportunities for fun!  Don’t miss the Labor Day Weekend Concert at the Lake Martin Amphitheatre on Sunday September 2nd with Sister Hazel and the Robin Hill Band.  Gates open at 4:30 PM with the show starting at 7:00 PM.

There has been a lot of late night fishing for Stripes this week.  I’ve heard of Stripes being caught around the Kowaliga Bridge and the Elkahatchee Bridge has been productive all summer.  There’s also another very productive spot, but that’s classified information according to Tommy and Brent!  They are catching stripes in excess of 10 pounds in 30 ft. depth and have had some very good luck with a new type of live bait, a mix between carp and goldfish. They are buying the ones from 5” – 8” in size. This is very hearty bait, almost impossible to kill.  In fact, my husband fished for two hours with one of them last Sunday afternoon, didn’t catch anything, but brought it back to the house, put it in a vat, and it’s still alive!   Now Reed will probably be very ill with me for putting it in the paper that he went fishing and didn’t catch anything.  The truth is, he was Spot Tail fishing, and he did get a good catch of those!

I also heard from another fishing buddy that he is having luck using live bait as well.  He is catching Bream with crickets and using them as bait for the Stripes. According to the Alabama Fishing Regulations, all species of Bream may be used as bait as long as a person does not have in his possession total numbers in excess of the daily creel limit, regardless of size and that the Bream are harvested legally.  According to the Alabama Fishing Limits the creel and possession limits for Bream is 50.  I should stress that other native game fish may not be used for bait.  If you have questions about what you can use for bait or creel and possession limits, check it out at www.outdooralabama.com/fishing/freshwater/regulations.

I’d like to wish you all a safe and happy Labor Day weekend.  Watch those depth finders and channel markers, keep the boat off the bottom and don’t drink and drive or speed on the highways or the waterways.  Play during the day and fish at night!  No better way to while away the weekend and let’s make this the safest Labor Day weekend this Lake has seen in many years!

You can contact me by email at dduck821@windstream.net with your latest best fishing story or any hints you would like to pass along.  I would also love to get photos of your biggest catches.  Together we’ll fish Lake Martin bringing in those big catches and telling even bigger stories!
