Camille A. Brown and Dancers is a Bessie Award-winning, New York City-based dance company advancing the artistic vision of Camille A. Brown. Founded in 2006, the company performs locally and across the world, inviting audiences into stories and dialogues about race, culture and identity.

CABD is known for an introspective approach to cultural themes through visceral movement and sociopolitical dialogues. Camille A. Brown leads her dancers through excavations of ancestral stories, encouraging each dancer to embrace their unique embodiment of the artistic vision and gestural vocabulary.

The work uses theatricality and the aesthetics of modern, hip-hop, African, ballet and tap to tell stories that connect history with contemporary culture. Strongly character-based, it expresses each topic by building from little moments, modeling a filmic sensibility. Theater, poetry, visual art and music of all genres merge to inject each performance with energy and urgency.

The company has performed at national and international venues, including the Joyce Theater, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, the Yard, American Dance Festival, Bates Dance Festival, New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival, Celebrate Brooklyn!, Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, World Music/CRASHarts, the Kumble Theater, Atlas Performing Arts Center, the Kravis Center, White Bird, and the Belfast Festival at Queen’s in Belfast, Ireland. In 2014, CABD received the Bessie Award for Outstanding Production for Mr. TOL E. RAncE.

We would love to talk to you about hosting your event at Zazu's Verandah! We are an awsome location for rehearsal dinners, bridal luncheons, parties and reunions!

Zazu’s Verandah is an event space on the beautiful Dadeville Square. With attention to every detail, owners Mitzy & Rick Hidding in 2019, totally renovated the 1914 Hick’s & Oliver Building into a chic city-barn space. Renovations showcase the original brick wall, the 14’ ceilings are painted haint blue, the interior walls are wrapped in warm wood, the heart pine floors were restored to be as beautiful as they were in 1914, and the front verandah is an inviting space to enjoy a shady spot. The cozy chairs up front even look like a happy heard of cows! The custom acoustic panels turn Zazu's Verandah into a great listening room for live musical performances. They’ve built a catering kitchen that leaves nothing out and they have 3 bathrooms including one ADA. Oh…they also have an ABC License for wine and beer!

Event tickets are only $10 and available now at the United Way office or at the door the day of the event.

We hope you will join us! Check out the Expo Event page for more information. https://www.facebook.com/events/614655702979827

Yamato was founded by Masa Ogawa in 1993 in Nara—the land of Yamato, which is said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. Presently based in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, Yamato travels all over the world with Japan’s traditional Wadaiko drums, putting its very souls into the unusual instruments, whose sound stirs the hearts of people everywhere. In the village of Asuka, a place with more than a thousand years of history and culture, Yamato seeks new expression with Wadaiko as its backbone. They think of the sound of the drums—made of animal skin and ancient trees, some of which are more than 400 years old—as a pulse or heartbeat (Shin-on), the center of life and the source of power that pulsates within the human body. Like the strong and sturdy heartbeats of a lonely runner with a sleek and powerful body, Yamato attempts to create the energy of life, which envelops the audience and performers. What one feels when surrounded by the sound of Wadaiko, brought out by these highly trained performers, is what the Japanese call “Tamashy,” meaning soul, spirit and psyche—the basic elements of life. It is something invisible and intangible but whose existence is certainly felt. The pulse, carried down from antiquity, will resonate within all the bodies gathered at any given performance.

Classical piano prodigy Alfredo Rodríguez and street percussionist Pedrito Martinez, two of Cuba’s most exciting and innovative artists, have joined forces to form the Cuban jazz supergroup, the Alfredo Rodríguez and Pedrito Martinez Duo. Both hailing from Havana, Rodríguez was born into a musical family, his father a popular singer and TV host. A child prodigy, he studied classical piano at the prestigious Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán and Instituto Superior de Arte while playing popular music in his father’s orchestra by night. While performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006 he was discovered by his future mentor and producer, the legendary Quincy Jones. Martinez honed his craft on the streets of Havana, learning the deeply rooted percussion and vocal style of Afro-Cuban folkloric and religious music. A master percussionist and vocalist, he arrived in the U.S. in 1998, and was soon awarded First Place at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Afro-Latin Hand Drum Competition. Their first collaborative album, Duologue, released in February 2019 and produced by Quincy Jones, finds the pair exploring a range of moods and influences, from Cuban classics to collaborative original compositions to a number of unexpected favorites, like a version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and their joyous take on the theme from the classic video game “Super Mario Bros. 3.” More traditional is their bristling rendition of the Cuban classic, “El Punto Cubano.”

March 29, 2022 (7:30 PM - 10:00 PM)

A phenomenally successful instrumentalist whose recordings routinely made the pop, R&B and jazz charts during the 1980s and ’90s, Kenny G‘s sound became a staple on adult contemporary and smooth jazz radio stations. He’s a fine player with an attractive sound (influenced a bit by Grover Washington, Jr.) who often caresses melodies, putting a lot of emotion into his solos. Because he does not improvise much (sticking mostly to predictable melody statements), his music largely falls outside of jazz. However, because he is listed at the top of “contemporary jazz” charts and is identified with jazz in the minds of the mass public, he is classified as jazz.

Kenny Gorelick started playing professionally with Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1976. He recorded with Cold, Bold & Together (a Seattle-based funk group) and freelanced locally. After graduating from the University of Washington, Kenny G worked with Jeff Lorber Fusion, making two albums with the group. Soon he was signed to Arista, recording his debut as a leader in 1982. His fourth album, Duotones (which included the very popular “Songbird”), made him into a star. Soon he was in demand for guest appearances on recordings of such famous singers as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole. Kenny G’s own records have sold remarkably well, particularly Breathless, which has easily topped eight million copies in the U.S.; his total album sales top 30 million copies. The holiday album Miracles, released in 1994, and 1996’s Moment continued the momentum of his massive commercial success. He also recorded his own version of the Celine Dion/Titanic smash “My Heart Will Go On” in 1998, but the following year he released Classics in the Key of G, a collection of jazz standards like “‘Round Midnight” and “Body and Soul,” possibly to reclaim some jazz credibility.

Faith: A Holiday Album was released that same year, followed by a limited-edition re-release of the 1997 Greatest Hits disc. In 2002, Kenny G dipped into tropical territory with Paradise, which featured guest appearances by Brian McKnight and Chanté Moore. This was followed by a music video collection, another holiday album, entitled Wishes, and, in 2003, a second greatest-hits collection, Ultimate Kenny G. Perhaps in a bid to shake up his discography a bit, in 2004 Kenny G released At Last…The Duets Album, which featured duets with LeAnn Rimes and Chaka Khan. Two years later, smooth jazz’s king of the soprano sax returned to a purely instrumental approach on the brassy, big-band-inspired albums Holiday Collection and I’m in the Mood for Love; 2006 was also the year the artist was dubbed the best golfer in music by Golf Digest, beating out Vince Gill for the number one spot. In 2008, Kenny G released the Latin-inspired Rhythm and Romance. The sax player next drifted toward R&B for 2010’s Heart and Soul, which featured guest vocals from Robin Thicke and Babyface. A collection with Rahul Sharma called Namaste followed in 2012, and in 2015 Kenny G released a tribute to bossa nova titled Brazilian Nights.

May 13, 2022 (7:30 PM - 10:00 PM)

Since 2005, Acrobuffos, the husband and wife team of Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone, have been redefining traditional circus performance to the delight of all ages. Having performed collectively in 48 different countries, with seven inventive shows to their credit, the expert clown duo elevates the art of comedic, physical theater to mesmerizing, lighter-than-air spectacle.

Acrobuffos’s latest production, Air Play, is a circus-style adventure of two siblings journeying through a surreal world, with the ability to turn common, everyday objects into displays of uncommon beauty. Fabrics dance in the wind, balloons have a mind of their own, confetti turns into the night sky and an enormous canopy of hovering silk forever alters their future. “You feel you’re witnessing divine natural occurrences rather than carefully devised circus stunts,” raves the Hartford Courant.

Air Play merges circus and street-theater performance art with the sculptural artistry of Daniel Wurtzel, whose creations have been seen on Broadway and with Cirque du Soleil, Robert Lepage and Diane Paulus. With visual images seemingly sewn from the sky, this poetic ode to childhood will enchant and electrify the young and young at heart.

As National Safe Boating Week is an annual occurence, we are preparing for another campaign to spread the message of safe and responsible boating. This year, we will continue to educate the boating community about life jacket wear and the options that are available when it comes to comfortable and lightweight life jackets (Life Jacket Information). We are also working closely with our partner organizations to create a larger grassroots network and create a more consistent campaign message. We are hoping these collaborative efforts will increase awareness about the importance of always wearing life jackets while on the water.

Inspired by the beloved films, the romantic and adventure-filled new musical Anastasia is on a journey to Auburn at last! From the Tony Award-winning creators of the Broadway classic Ragtime, this dazzling show transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family. Anastasia features a book by celebrated playwright Terrence McNally, a lush new score by Stephen Flaherty (music) and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics), and direction by Tony Award-winner Darko Tresnjak.
