Jerry Willis was easily re-elected as Wetumpka's mayor Tuesday, gathering about 68 percent of the vote.

Willis collected 843 votes to challenger Greg Jones' 402. Jones, a retired state trooper captain, had served three terms on the City Council. Willis, 78, also served one term on the council before being elected mayor.

"I think the city saw the progress that Wetumpka has made and they want that progress to continue," Willis said Tuesday night. "We didn't know what to expect with the pandemic. People that usually voted didn't get out an vote.  But we are pleased with these results."

The campaign took a negative turn, he said.

"We have some healing to do," Willis said. "And then we are going to move forward. Wetumpka has very bright days ahead of her."

Jones could not be reached for comment.
