Mayor Al Kelley finds himself in an unusual spot seeking his seventh term in office in Millbrook. He is having to run a campaign.

The last three terms, a span of 12 years, Kelley was re-elected unopposed.

“Well, this is America. Anybody can run. It’s there right,” he said with a laugh. “It is unusual having to campaign, but I’m not taking anything for granted. We’re running like we’re behind and I’m telling everybody I need their vote.”

Municipal elections are Tuesday. Tim Love, Kelley’s opponent, did not return an email sent to mayoral candidates seeking comment on the upcoming election.

Kelley, 69, is running on his record.

“I couldn’t be prouder of how things are going,” Kelley said. “Taco Bell just opened up. Popeyes broke ground (Friday). We have Eliano’s Coffee Shop coming. The Fields at 17 Springs is going to be a major boost to the entire county. We worked with the Y, the county commission and schools to get that done. I can’t wait for these things to get up and running.

“It is important that Millbrook maintains the path of positive growth.  By continuing my mayoral term, I can assure this process will be achieved.”

The Fields at 17 Springs is a sprawling $35 million sports complex covering about 100 acres. The groundbreaking for the facility was last month.

Continuing that level of growth is the primary issue in the race, he said.

”I believe the most important issues are continued economic development growth and positive financial stability,” Kelley said. "My primary priorities will be to continue to advance quality of life goals for our citizens and also to insure that city department leaders have the tools they need to continue providing excellent city services to our citizens.”
